Detailed description of Southern Pines Golf Club, #1
Southern Pines Golf Club, #1, is a Private, 18 hole golf course located in Southern Pines, North Carolina.
The course first opened for play in 1906 as a 9-hole course and was expanded to 18-holes five years later. The course was designed by Donald Ross.
For years these two nines, the first 18-holes, were known as Southern Pines Golf Club, #1, The course was named #1, because there was an additional Donald Ross designed 9-hole course at Southern Pines, known as Southern Pines Golf Club, #2, This 3rd nine opened in 1920 and closed in 2008.
Southern Pines #1 is surrounded by woods and is very scenic. There is a stream that comes into play on four holes. The greens are undulating, and many of the greenside sand bunkers are unusually shaped. There are three dogleg fairways as part of the course design.
The course is a throwback to early 20th century courses where bump and run shots were the norm and tee shots demanded precision over length.
Par for the course is 71. From the back tees, the course plays to 6,268 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 5,318 yards and plays to a par-74. The longest hole on the course is # 5, a par-5 that plays to 534 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 7, a par-3 that plays to 163 yards from the back tees.
Watch out for # 6, a 423-yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Southern Pines Golf Course is # 14, a 172 yard par-3.

Played here 12-3-10 as part of a golf package. Have played it before, and consider it one of the really outstanding (and affordable) courses in the Pinehurst area. This is a course I could play every day: a Donald Ross gem. There is nothing about the golf course that says "hey look at me;" no moguls, no rail ties, no 25 foot deep bunkers, etc. It is a solid design that has been in play since 1906 (and some of the cart paths show it!), and has a timeless quality about it. No two holes are alike, no houses on the course, just plenty of good golf. Conditions were excellent for the time of year: fairways had been overseeded, and gave a nice contrast to the browned-out rough, and the greens, which are of moderate size (some are heavily contoured), putted medium fast and true. The course has elevation change, but nothing excessive, and the distances between green and the next tee are reasonable. Accordingly, I think it's walkable, although seniors might not be up to it. Pro shop staff was very hospitable, and shop was moderately stocked. I highly recommend this course.

A beautiful classic early Ross design with superb greens that are lightning fast with lots of breaks.

The staff is outstanding, do their best to make your day. Course was a little rough around the edges, but very playable and enjoyable.Well worth playing if in the Pinehurst area.
